Patrick Flanigan’s Blog

So it’s been a while, how bout a cup cake?

December 12, 2008 · Leave a Comment

My apologies for the past few months of a short hiatus. I’m back on tract with the computerization of diaries publish on this vast array of matrixinized networks that we call the “Internet”.

I deleted a few blogs as I felt that they didn’t suit the language of this blog, though they did certainly bring in a higher number of hits, which is always good. My Sarah Palin is a monster blog got the most hit’s that I have ever gotten for a blog. Though blogging isn’t all about hits, not this one at least.

So what’s new any who? Well recently I started playing the game “Second Life” during my spare time, that being after school, home work, taking care of the dogs, and misc. of little things that fill the day. So the other day, I came up with this bright idea. Why doesn’t Google, and Second Life, both come together to bring Google Maps/Street View to the virtual gaming realistic world creating a Web. 3.0 or 4.0 whatever number we are at now. Doing this would allow people to just use this virtual reality to as their regular internet…thats after creating a connection of various websites, like restuarant pages to the actual restaurant at the actual exact spot in the virtual world. How cool would that be? That would be rad!

So yea, I never got a reply, but I’m sure they are considering it, not cause I emailed them that idea, but because frankly, thats what the internet is becoming, 10-20 years from now. Wooohoo!

Other than that. I recently emailed Phillyburbs webmaster, which forwarded to the managers, basically recommending that they put together a mobile version of the page similar to CNN and NYTimes, so I can read it on my cell. Who know’s if they’ll pull through with that recommendation, but it would be cool jelly beans.

Further more, mm, I’m proud to announce now that I’m off to bed, nights!

Insane

August 22, 2008 · Leave a Comment

My attempts to reach out to other medias are known, I have attempted numerous times to reach out to Fox 29, 6abc, NBC 10, and Comcast CN8. It seems my efforts are only good for local papers, which I disagree with by and far in large. I very much think getting the dog park on more media outlets will grab others in our area to be know of this movement.  So I made my attempt at CNN using the I-Report community. The link was posted up for a few hours in a day, and a few hundred people viewed the entry, some followed the link to the blog. It was pretty cool.

A few weeks pass, and today comes. I go to my email account to only find a numerous
of comments waiting to be approved for the blog, and a number of emails waiting to be read from people. I was like “huh, all these people are randomly coming across my I-Report, that’s interesting!” I was thinking it was due to people reading my latest I-Report and checking out previous articles I did. So I checked to see the viewership of that one latest article, which was 92, which was pretty good since it hasn’t been on CNN yet. So out of curiosity I go a head and check my dog park I-Report. The last I looked a few days ago it was at 788…, it’s new number, 3152. Me – “WTF!”

I guess apparently CNN placed the link on the front page again? I went to CNN.com to see and I didn’t find any link to the I-Report article. So I was bewildered, but now at 4053, I’m convinced CNN placed it on the front page again. Which is awesome!

Thanks CNN, and thanks readers and supporters. It seems to have topped off at 4053.

Have a good weekend !

Self check out, Express lines

August 20, 2008 · Leave a Comment

The grocery store, a place to shop for the products you wish to have throughout the day, days, weeks and months to come. Many do big shoppings here, some do small short shoppings. From the small short shoppings came the birth of the 15 items or less express line. Which till this day I have yet to see this rule implemented. That doesn’t mean it hasn’t, after all I’m not at the grocery store 24/7. Just over the times I’ve had my own 15 items or less I always end up right behind some person buying a load of groceries to feed a family of 10.

With technology advancing, and the demand growing along with some influence of misanthropy then comes the self check out line. Ideally this would work wonders, got 1 item, got 2 3 4 5 whatever.. scan pay bag out. and oh…no one bothering you to donate to one of the billionth of causes that the so called corporation supports.

The issue lies in that you get people who do big shoppings and go through these lines at the same time as the people wanting to buy one thing and get out. Yet creating a massive back up.

So I always skip to the front desk, or to the flower cashier, or to the pharmacy. A place that has a cashier, with a short line and out you go. I’ve honestly never had a problem with this, no one has ever objected to this. I usually go to the Front Desk, as I did today. There stands an employee, that has nothing to do, or at least standing around like she has nothing to do. I wanted to buy 5 teas, for $5, good deal since its Honest Tea! She goes “this is what the express lines are for, and the self check outs”..with a fairly sharp attitude to stab you with. I am naturally a fighter…so I had to go in response too, “well, not everyone follows the rules at the 15 items or less, and a good amount don’t know how to use the self-check out”, “well this is a front desk its not a cash out line”, so, I go “if you would like I can bring my business else where as you are not the only grocery store in this area, and many of the other stores I go to don’t mind since I am buying something and in return making the company money.” So in turn, she cashed me out, with out saying much else, I paid by cash, $5 exactly.

Look, if a cash register is there, and you are able to ring me out then do it! After all you are a paid employee, by this cash register, and for one reason or another you are in charge of that station. So operate that station as a good employee, friendly and kind to the customers. I mean of course if I have a whole grocery
basket full of crap that’s a little too much, 5 tea? what? Deal with it!

I refuse to name the grocery store, or the employee that I had an issue with, as I feel that is stepping across the line, which I rather not do.

In the near future though, next time I’m in the area, I will make sure I go to the other grocery store along the way that I never have issues with in regards to buying a few teas and heading on out.

What companies, and GMs need to realize is if this is a practice they wish to persue, that it will reflect negatively on people like myself. We just want to get a bottle of water, tea, soda, whatever and get out. Why not use a convience store like 711 or Wawa? I personally don’t like either of them and they don’t always carry the product that I wish to have that the grocery stores may carry. However the product that the store carries that I want, is carried at various other stores that don’t have a problem with people checking out a few items at the front desk. Also the independent health food stores carry these products as well, I really don’t mind going to the health food stores to get them, just it was a bit closer to run into this one store. It is up to the companies to decide whether they like to practice this kind of customer service, or scare away customers like me back to the health food stores..which is fine, just you are not getting my money then, the local store owners are. Which is much better any ways!

Until next time, blogya later!

As we sit. (late night blog, will edit later! maybe)

August 10, 2008 · Leave a Comment

The walk is on, the wind blows, the night is enveloped in chilled weather. What a nice night to go for a walk. Clear sky, a nice breeze and not a soul to be seen. Here is a perfect summer night walk. My dogs and I make our way to the recreation center. On the way, they relieve themselves, I clean up, and trash the clean up. In between I daze off in sort a walker’s high. I think of things, and just chill my mind.

We make our way to the recreation area, not a soul in site. So we head to the playground, where I let my dogs run around for a bit. Nellie loves climbing the play gym to only shoot down the slide. Saranac goes onto the bouncy bridge to bounce like a silly fool of course. Chimay…well…Chimay is Chimay. She runs around the play ground in circles until she is tired..or well, till we leave.

I sat there on the tire like swing, there I just thought and let the mind run loose.

Vacation time is near over, work season has begun. My time is pretty limited now, which is good news for the dog park. When I’m off having summer fun that means I have little to no time to do laptop research google work stuff. That’s if I even have a laptop with internet..thanks to camp grounds not catching up to wifi yet..sorta a good thing I guess.

So I sit and enjoy watching the dogs act like children. The dog park is about to get very active again, and with that I ponder about other things. Other projects that I would love to go about doing. Other things I wish to see the township and county go about doing.

i wish I could share all of them, but there are so many it would be a book of a blog…heh, not sure if I have the energy to write that nor if you have the energy or will to read that.

As I stated before, I wish to see Newtown Township take to completing a sidewalk on Eagle Road where one doesn’t need to travel through a neighborhood to get to town. I also wish to see Newtown Township take on a side walk on 413. For the Newtown part, come on, it shouldn’t be that hard! You got at least 3 developments going in on 413. Near Wrighstown, then between Newtown Grant north and south, near the Akshar (sp?) Vet Clinic, and another one near Tyler Walk. Aren’t these developers required to put in side walks any who? Why not make them pull through with this requirement? If not..well, that sucks, why not make it a requirement and make them put some side walks along 413. Then you have the Woll Tract, have some of that land near 413 become a side walk as well.

The rest I guess the township would have to cover to finish the side walk project, but frankly a sidewalk along 413 is a big investment that should be considered.

Then here comes my bike path idea, to make our town a bit more trendy and hopping, why not play into the nature lover’s ear, lets rig up a bike path that would run along the Newtown creek, and would meet up with the Neshaminy Creek.

On the County side, we should look into a similar bike path all along the Neshaminy Creek to meet up with the Delaware River. It may be costly, but the pay off well, the pay off is a nice path you can ride your bike, walk your dogs, take a jog along the beautiful water way..from north to south.

Another County issue is Trans Fat, I wish to see the county put a ban on this, to join the many other cities, municipals, and counties in the fight against trans fat. That and smoking in restaurants.

Finally, I think the township and county should look into a 1% “clone tax”. What’s a clone tax? Well, it’s my version of saying, tax every restaurant that does the same exact thing as the next restaurant across the street. Pizza, Italian, Hoagies, Bagels, Pubs/Bars, Chinese, Thai. Whatever. Use this tax to bring incentives to non-clone restaurants, Greek, Vegetarian, Organic, French, Russian, etc. Let’s help attract more restaurants to our area of different taste, not of the same. It’s fine if you want to open up the 1 billionth pizza place, or the 12 billionth Italian restaurant, but honestly, your restaurant is no different from that one over there..and there be should a small 1% tax to give an incentive to help restaurant entrepreneurs that want to bring a different menu to the table of Bucks. This incentive can be used to attract such groups as the Starr Restaurant Group, or the Susanna Foo Group, or some independent chefs similar to Chef Pierre to help bring some Le Bec Fin style restaurants to the county.

Just thoughts and ideas that I came up with while watching my girls at like clowns on the play gym.

Though thats it for now,

My heart goes out to Mayor Cheye Calvo

August 10, 2008 · 1 Comment

It’s been a few days since this made national headlines, the raid on the Mayor’s house which resulted in the shooting of his 2 black labradors. As a labrador lover, and as a dog lover I can only imagine how the scene played out. This is a horrible incident, which should of never happened. Yet some how, in some way has happened to the right person. Some one who has a voice who can speak out about this, to help prevent such a thing from happening to others.

Such investigations really should be done with care, Prince George County lacked that, and seems to be due to a large dose of corruption within the county. Honestly, if the correct investigation was done, officers would of known there were dogs in the house. With this information, at least have an officer gladded in K9 training gear, which they use to train German Shepherds, and from that, grab the dogs to then place them in ready available crates. Not shoot them, and now you know why not to shoot them. Because now you have a big effing mess on your hands.

I sure hope the FBI does a good job at investigating the county government and the county police, and I sure hope there are some consequences that are paid for this wrongly and poorly executed operation.

As for Mayor Cheye Calvo, I hope to you the best, the best thing to do via healing is often to get a new pet. It very well may be much harder do to the circumstances, but it’s a thought. On to other issues, you now have a deck of cards handed to you, deal with tactics. From this incident you can quickly take over the County Executive seat if played well. Or to state or federal levels. How bout Congressman Cheye Calvo? The bigger the name you get, the bigger the punch you can throw at this, the better you can crack it in a sense of making sure it never happens to another citizen ever again.

Congressman Cheye Calvo..President Cheye Calvo…hey you got my vote!

Best of wishes to you,

Patrick

Nellie’s famous!

July 31, 2008 · Leave a Comment

After hitting it up on I-Report with my dog park story, using a picture of Nellie and Chimay at the Burlington, VT dog park, they posted it on the front page of CNN for a bit, which was rad. So I’ve been keeping up to day with my I-Report account, just reading other entries, aka blogs. Just enjoying what the site offers, so they, as in I-Report asked people to send in photos as to how they are cooling off during the heat wave. I posted my reply of Nellie swimming at Lake Luxembourg.  The picture was selected for use for this weeks offbeat ireport CNN article. So that means…that’s the second time Nellie made her way on CNN. She’s becoming quite the model :)

I’ll be posting more stuff on I-Report in hopes for more seconds of fame. haha, well that and to share stories with  people.

Well other than that, I’m off to enjoying the rest of the night.

Pawesome!

July 25, 2008 · Leave a Comment

So an update as to how Saranac is doing. Today was her week 6 exam, check up. She’s doing great! I was given the ok to let her go swimming again, woohoo! Also to start picking up more coverage of walking distance. You may of noticed me around the borough this evening with her, prancing down State Street, Sycamore Street, and the shopping plazas.

I’m so happy she’s doing so much better, I can’t wait till I can start taking her to the shore with the other girls. Mainly during off season, spshh..to peak time, to many folks to complain about dogs running loose on the beach and digging enormous holes for people to be eaten up by.

Chimay, the tooth problematic dog is doing fine, I decided to wait since the teeth seem to be alright, and that 3 out of the 5 Vets I talked to said she would be fine. Spshhmshh tazzz wit. in Pat language that basically means “owned”.

Other than that I some how managed to make it on CNN with my I-Report article…it was totally like “HOLY HELL!” reaction. My I-Report article can be viewed by clicking here.

Other than that I just wanted to post an up to date on the Nac-Attack (AKA Saranac), and Chimay.

Till next time,

Blogya later.

Should 413 get a side walk?

July 15, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Gas prices are going bonkers, with no end in site. Along 413 in Newtown Township, Wrightstown, Pineville, and Buckingham, developments are popping up faster than you can say “CONSERVE SOME OF THAT LAND!!!”. Traffic is piling up on this cement, two lane artery, and people only wish a side walk, such as the one that runs along Eagle Rd was placed along the side.

So how much would this project cost? I don’t know! I’m just a dreamer. Perhaps the different townships could pass some sort of legislation recommending or uhh forcing Developers of such neighborhoods to work on a side walk project.

Perhaps the project could be paid for by issuing more traffic tickets, with a higher fine to pay. Perhaps set up some more cameras at different traffic lights to nab red light runners. Or even crazier, set up a system that would put in place speed snapping cameras that would take the picture of the license plate of the driver driving past the camera, and if registering above the speed limit issue a ticket. Place these types of cameras through out the township, you are bound to ring in some cash-cash-money-money-bling-bling.

Just a few ideas on how to raise money for such a project. I for one probably wont take the lead on this project as I did with the Dog Park concept, mainly because I am still busy with such. However, if you are a resident who agrees with this project, why not leave a comment on my blog so we can talk about it some. Perhaps make yourself known to the Board of Supervisors, and take lead of this project yourself. I would be more then happy to help, and support such a movement.

Ah…a town with actual side walks where you can walk and ride your bike to town, and well save on gas and burn calories! Now thats a dream!

My thoughts on wordpress.com (and a little bio on my blogging history!)

July 15, 2008 · 3 Comments

Web Diary. Web Journal. Web Log….Blog.

The first such big blogging web site was Open Diary, it really was as it sounds, an online diary. I actually have a private account with them, nothing special, I just wanted to test them out. Meh really. I can’t take the credit though of starting up with them in the early days of web blogging as I didn’t know of the site at the time. I just started an account a few months ago to see their layout, tis all.

My experience rooted from the same early years of Open Diary, but through personal pages that were free from my AOL account. The webpage I made was meh. It was just a bunch of nonsense you’d expect a 13 year old to throw up on a web site. “I like boobs!”

The free AOL service did have it’s problems, and the search for something better was launched. The next site was on Angelfire, before Lycos join up, or buy out, whatever they did. This page was meh, it had a purpose, but not really. It simply was met to share my current taste of music to the world. Yet the world really had no way of looking at it, so it stayed in my group of friends and classmates. “TKK rocks man!” Though, if one did know HTML, they could do marvelous things to their own page..I knew little about this language.

The experimenting with Geocities followed the next year. I had a new taste in music, and wanted to share it on a different web site. I heard great things about Geocities, so I wanted to try it. So I did. Honestly, at least at the time, the same exact thing. From which came good old teenage band fanaticism…”LOA forever!”

The birth of Sythantat shortly followed…sigh. Sythantat I even bought a domain name to, www.sythantat.com. It was met to promote my musical ambitions. Sadly, I didn’t know much about that kind of stuff..but learned as I failed. Sythantat’s web domain was due for repayment the end of the year.. I decided due to the fact that I wasn’t attempting to make any more music, that I’d end it.

A year later, my energy that was left with the end of my music aspirations turned into writing short stories. My friend introduced me to Livejournal.com. At the time this was an awesome site, I was able to post without worrying about html, and relying on my friends help for such. I posted a good amount of short stories, though within the years to come I decided to end it due to lack of interest in the site. Sadly..with ending it..it was all deleted.

From the end of my Livejournal account, came the rise of Myspace. “A place for friends”. The blogging here was generally crap compared to Livejournal blogging, and to this day remains by far the worst blogging tool I have ever used. I only use it not for quick notes to my friends on my account, which I still use, for the same reason as I use Facebook, connecting with old friends, and whatz not. Friendster isn’t really worth it btw, their day came, and is now gone..for good.

I did attempt a myspace blogging campaign called “Battle Puppymills”, it’s effort was to teach people about the horror stories behind pet store bought pets, and the industries big brand food companies such as Hills (Science Diet, and Hill’s Prescription Pet Food). It gained support but there were no end goals besides abolishing puppy mills. The problem is it was one of 1000s of blogs that pertained to this. Granted, I did gain a good amount of valuable connections through this campaign. However the fact that so many people were doing the same thing all at once sorta diluted it’s potential.

Near the end, I started to play with my first wordpress account. Under estimating how powerful WordPress was in regards to the tag lines, keywords, and search engine results, my blog being fairly generalized focused on township relating issues, from which the concept of the dog park was brought to an entry. The concept was one that would need some maturing..after being the biggest hit on the blog site..I decided it was time to start up a side blog for the dog park, calling it the Bucks County Dog Park Initiative. This went over amazingly well, and from that I disbanded my old blog from before.

I have been looking around at other blog service sites such as blogger.com, blog.com, vox.com and a few others. All of the blog sites I’ve been to offer templates, like WordPress, which are free. They help cut back on the annoyance of having to do the coding yourself. They also allow you to costume edit the image heading and what nots.

The thing you need to notice is if you want to blog and decide to do it, there are a lot of free services out there. A lot of the free services have VIP services where people pay, and with that they often get placed in the “featured” section. If thats what you want then great, but it’s not needed, over time your blog will obtain the attraction you wish it will obtain as long as you keep it interesting enough. I’m staying with wordpress as of now, mainly because I really do enjoy their service over Xanga, Livejournal, Blogger, Blog.com, Vox.com, and a few others that I have tried. I don’t exactly know why, it just really seems a lot more user friendly.

When you open an account you’ll find theres a forum section full of nice fellow bloggers willing to help you out with any questions problems you may have. So that’s that, my wordpress solute blog…hey it seems that everyone has one these days. That and the “how to” blogs about wordpress..but yea..you wont see me writing a “how to”…I don’t know that much about this site :)

July 4th, 2008

July 7, 2008 · Leave a Comment

So as an avid dog lover, I normally go to the parks with my girls to let them enjoy the great naturalness that they contain. I favor Core Creek Park out of all the other County parks, mainly because it’s the closest, and I prefer lakes over creeks, in the sense of Playwicki. This actually has a lot to do with why Core Creek competes fairly well and often wins over Tyler. When it comes to my dogs swimming, I much prefer to let them swim in a wide open area, versus a narrow area. Granted Neshaminy Creek is much larger than Lake Luxembourg, however wideness is what wins the labrador swim test.

As the 4th approached I made sure that I got my girls, at least Nellie and Chimay out to swim before the big weekend.  While Saranac got to enjoy longer walks as part of her rehabilitation. When the 4th approached, I tend to avoid going to the parks, or the beaches, and with that said I also tend to avoid walking them that night due to the fire works being fairly scary to all 3.

In short, my weekend didn’t consist of much, a lot of my friends were out at the beaches, or some where else. Being short on money and wanting to be with the dogs through one of their most dreaded holidays to help calm their fears, I stayed home.

When complete boredom approached, I got the idea of starting to mess with Wikipedia to learn about creating articles. I learned that Core Creek Park didn’t have an article, nor did Clark Nature Center. So I put together 2 articles, proud of my achievement, I took a break and came back…to only find them deleted by the Wiki-Administrators. Well Clark was deleted, Core Creek was marked for deletion. So out of spite I made Clark again, and luckily found other Administrators and Users to back and support the creation of the articles. So they stay a live for now..though the peaceful lively hood of their existence is still under threat do to the articles being ‘kept an eye on’ by the Administrators. You can view the following articles by clicking the following links, Core Creek Park, and Clark Nature Center. Feel free to edit either of these pages yourself with any additional information, images, etc.

When I got bored of working on those, I decided to start a new blog, which point isn’t to share my life, or my ambitions to get something in the community, but to share my pictures of my dogs. Of course theres photobucket, and flickr, but the issue with them is you can’t show them off like you can with a blog. As blogs come up in searches and what not. So using my photobucket account to bring images over to my new blog, I created 2 entries and am working on a few others. Feel free to check them out at “A blog of pictures“.

After creating those, I really didn’t have much of a weekend left, this week is a pretty booked week, so it was sorta good that I had the boredom that I haven’t had since…ooh….I was a teenager without a license to drive…ugh I miss those days…I didn’t have to pay for gas :-P
